A Battle of the Bands For My Mama

Happy May everyone!

I hope that everything is alright. It has been a tough few months all over the world. It has been a roller coaster here in Japan as every day is either high or low. Things change every day. That is why I am taking each moment slowly and just enjoy life day by day.

Mother’s Day will be celebrated next week all over the world. This year, mostly everyone will celebrate this special day in a different way due to the Coronavirus and the lockdowns. But, it doesn’t mean that Mother’s Day is canceled, we just have to celebrate differently. What are you doing for this special day this year?

For me, I celebrate Mother’s Day virtual as I am far away from my mom. Hopefully, if things get better, I can celebrate it with her later this year as I am planning to go back to the US for a week or so to see her. I still send my mothers virtually hugs and kisses to her every Mother’s Day and also every day!

Happy Mother's Day // Happy Mama Day

A Battle For My Mama

I have featured a song about Mothers before, which was the 1988 song “Thanks For My Child” by Cheryl ‘Pepsii’ Riley. But, I never had a Battle of the Bands that features any songs about mama. Until now!

The songs I featured were from groups that were super popular in the 90s. Ironically, the two songs were released in the same year, which was 1997. The first song is “Mama” by the world-famous girl group The Spice Girls. The other song is “A Song For My Mama” by the most popular R&B group of the 90s: Boyz II Men.

So, listen to both of the songs and vote for your favorite in the comments below!

“Mama” by The Spice Girls

This is such a bittersweet song from my childhood. I remember when this came out in 1997 at the peak of The Spice Girls’ popularity. “Mama” is all about the love for a mother through the heart of a woman who reflects back on her relationship with her mom. This woman realizes that she is ashamed of the troublesome relationship she had with her mama throughout her teenage years. Now, as a grown woman, she realizes how valuable her mother and her advice. Even though she feels ashamed about her past, the woman reflects on her past as she thinks of the feelings she has for her mother now: “I love you mama, I care for you mama”.

About the premise of the song, member Mel B said this: “We wrote ‘Mama’ when I was going through a bad phase with my mum. The sentiments are really that your mum’s probably the best friend that you’ve got. Whether she’s an overprotective mother or a bit of a landmine, she probably knows you better than yourself in some ways.”[1]

Mel C also had this say about the song; “Mama’s all about how you’re such a cow to your mum when you’re going through that rebellious teenage stage. Then when you get a bit older, you realize that whatever she was doing, she was only doing it for your own good. And you think: ‘God, I was really horrible.”[1]

By the way, the music video features the mothers of the members. Geri and Victoria said it was weird to bring their mom to work, but I think it was a super cute idea. Did you find the Spice Girls’ moms?

“A Song For Mama” by Boyz II Men

“A Song For Mama” was released by Boyz II Men for the movie Soul Food. A beautiful song sang one of the finest bands in the 90s, “A Song For Mama” is a song that reflects on what moms have done for us since we were born until now. It also praises moms for being themselves, always giving us love and support unconditionally. It is a lovely song to celebrate mothers all over the world!

Mama, Mama you know I love you
Mama, Mama you’re the queen of my heart
Your love is like tears from the stars
Mama I just want you to know lovin’ you is like food to my soul

I will have to check out these songs! They sound like they are some good ones.

    1. Marta

Thanks for sharing. Will check them out, they all sound like good ones.

  2. Krysten Quiles

Spice Girls HANDS DOWN. I didn’t really appreciate them when I was younger but now? I love them! Thanks for the awesome battle of the bands!

  3. Cathy Kennedy

    Amy,

What a sweet tribute to Mom! I think I like the SPICE GIRLS best in this battle. The video was a sweet touch.

All is well on this end. Just busy doing what I always do, little has changed for me other than having DH working from home. He may go back into the office some time next month. I think as the summer months approach I’ll slack off in Blogosphere a bit. I need time to regroup. Have a bandtastic day!

  4. Adrienne

Thanks for sharing these songs about moms. I vaguely remember them from my childhood, I completely forgot until you reminded me.

  5. Lydia

Mother’s Day in England has already happened, and I did a charcoal sketch of my mums favourite animal – a flamingo! She loves it, and wants to get it framed which makes me really happy. I vote for Boys 2 Men!

  6. Stephanie

Oh you are singing to my 90’s girl heart with these songs! They are both great, but I have to go with Boyz II Men, they have always been one of my favorites, especially this song. I won’t get to spend Mother’s Day with my mom this year since I can’t travel, either. But my husband said he already has a few ideas that he can help our boys with for me that day 🙂

  7. Jessica Collazo

I’m sorry but for me is Boyz II Men to man they have such great voices. I like the Spice Girls but for For Me Boyz II Men are the best.

  8. Neely Moldovan

Always have to go with Boyz 2 men! I love that song and I was never super into spice girls.

  9. CA

My vote will definitely go to Mama of the Spice Girls! Everything about it touches a child’s heart.

  10. Tara Pittman

Lots of good songs. It would be hard to choose just one

    1. Georgia

I vote A song for mama! Mama, Mama you’re the queen of my heart! PERFECT

  11. Marjie Mare

Boyz II Men is a winner for me and their song for mama holds a special place in my heart. Just like you, I am taking each moment slowly and whenever I am not working at the hospital, I am just counting my blessings.

  12. Marie Phillips

Although I am very familiar with both groups, I had never heard of either song. I am going to have to go with Spice Girls though!

  13. Cindy Ingalls

Spice Girls! I hope my daughter feels this way now that she’s 30.

  14. Arugba Stanley

I will certainly go for Boyz II Men. Those guys are exceptionally amazing.

  15. I love these. I used to hear these when I was younger. 🙂 it really is a good tribute to mamas…

  16. Shar

You’ve brought back some early memories… Spice Girls & all. I’ll take a look at your list more closely.

  17. World in Eyes

Wonderful post, thank you for sharing these great songs about moms.

  18. Mariyam

Nice choice for mama related songs. I’m going to forward some of these to my mom!

  19. Shruti

Rooting for mama of the spice girls…Its amazing and touching at the same time

  20. My mom passed away a few years ago so I am hesitant to listen to any of those songs as they may cause me to get emotional. For those of you with your moms still around do enjoy each and every moment. Happy Mother’s Day👏

  21. Holly

I’ll always be a little partial to the Spice Girls. I loved them in the 90s!

  22. parul

    thanks for the information

  23. Melanie williams

Oh my gosh this takes me back Boys to men used to be one of the girls firm favs for sure x

  24. Joanne

I know those two bands were famous back in the day. However, I’m not really into either bands music. Hence, I’m going to have to remain neutral on this one.

  25. Fatima Torres

These are great songs for mamas. Perfect to celebrate this Mother’s Day.

  26. kev S

These songs are a great mother’s day gift

  27. Bella

these are some really good songs, thank you for sharing.

  28. Erika Ravnsborg

They are very good songs but I vote “Mama” by Spice Girls. I played it all the time when I was a kid

  29. Britt K

I love the song Mama – it’s like a throw back to childhood when the Spice Girls were all the rage. At the time, I don’t think I really grasped the depth of that song though. It’s not until now, as an adult, that I can really value the importance of that close friendship with your mother.

  30. Sophia

My mom would love all of these. I am going to share this with her.

  31. Stephen T. McCarthy

    AMY ~

It was very sweet of you to do a tribute to your dear, ol’ Ma!

I’ll cast my vote for BOYZ II MEN. I just prefer male vocalists in general. And this was one of those “general” times.

  32. Theresa

Ok, so I hadn’t heard either of these songs, so I had to listen to them both. Well, jeezus, this just had my feelings all over the place. I vote for Boyz II Men, but good lord… pick something less freaking emotional, LOL! 🙂 I’m just giving you a hard time, it really was a great post… I’m gonna go cry now 😉

  33. Sherrie

I’m not sure which of these songs would win for me. I think my favorite song about a mom is Stacy’s Mom by Fountains of Wayne, though that probably isn’t appropriate for Mother’s Day 🙂

  34. Joanna

I would have to go with the Spice Girls, just because of the history they’ve made. Mother’s Day has already passed in my country, it’s interesting to see how it’s celebrated on a different date in other parts of the world.

  35. Arlee Bird

Had to go to YouTube for the Boyz2men song. Both are very nice tunes.

My daughters were still at home when the Spice Girls were popular and they loved this group. I actually enjoyed them as well.

Give my vote to Spice Girls–I prefer their sound and the melody of the song.

  39. Life Mag Health

Boyz II Men’s A Song For Mama is so touching and heart felt. Happy Mother’s to your mom, mine and all the moters out there!

  40. Nati

I did not know any of these songs! They are a bit cheesy, but so appropriate to celebrate your mom!

  41. Christa

My vote is enthusiastically cast for Boyz II Men I was just never really a huge Spice Girls fan.

  42. Viano Dee

Wow! These brought back memories. These are nice songs, I can’t choose one. It just makes one realize how fast time flies. Thanks for sharing.

  43. Kimberly

As a 90s child and self proclaimed Spice Girl fanatic, I’ll always go with the spice girls! Mama was one of my favorite songs from them 🙂
