Today’s “25 Days of Holiday Songs” post is written by Venus of Blueberry Creative Designs. Venus talks about one of her favorite Christmas songs,. a timeless classic, and her favorite version. Thanks, Venus for your wonderful write-up!
Happy Holidays! I Want to thank aisasami for the opportunity to be part of this lovely Christmas challenge. Today I am going to share one of my favorite Christmas songs: an oldie (because I am old school all the way to the ‘20s!) Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Oh! How I love this song! It brings me a mixture of memories that warm my heart. The song itself has a peaceful vibe, and I listened to it all the time when I was away from home. Every song has its own unique story, and I wanted to share with you this particular song’s tale.
You have probably listened to this beautiful song in the voice of Michael Bublé or Kelly Clarkson, but we are going to rewind all the way to the ’40s to meet the creators behind this song.

Ralph Blane and Hugh Martin, composers, and songwriters, contributed to many Broadway musicals and movie scores. Their creativity led them to write musical scores for many famous productions earning them several Oscar and Tony nominations.
It is believed that this song was written in the 1940s. MGM used it in the 1944 movie “Meet Me in St. Louis”, and performed by the fabulous Jury Garland. Before she sang this song in the movie, she requested to make a few changes to make it more cheerful.
It was an instant hit.
A few years later, a world-famous star brought it back to life. I am talking about none other than Mr. Frank Sinatra, who rendered this song in his Christmas album “A Jolly Christmas” with a slight change of lyrics to make it more upbeat.
It was magic.
Since then, it was performed by many heavyweights of the golden era like the one and only Ella Fitzgerald.
However, in my heart, my champion for this song will always be Frank Sinatra. “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” is timeless. It can make you feel nostalgic or hopeful, you can reminiscence your childhood, or bring great memories to you and your family.
Either way, this song will stay for us to share with the generations to come.
Have a Merry Christmas Y’all!

Lyrics
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on, our troubles will be out of sight
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the yule-tide gay
From now on, our troubles will be miles away
Here were are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

I like the Judy Garland version better. She had a remarkable voice.
This is indeed a Christmas classic, and one that becomes more and more meaningful the older a person gets. I’m not even going to explain that. The more sensitive Millennials will find out in their own time, as the calendar pages keep turning.
There’s a pronounced bittersweet quality that this song was built around, and it’s the singers who can really tap into that with their voices who do this song best.
One of my very favorite renditions is by Karen Carpenter, because she had that “saudade” (look it up) quality in her voice naturally. She couldn’t keep from expressing it even if she tried to. Karen could sing a song like ‘Sing’ (“sing of happy, not sad”) and it would still come out sounding a little sad. Ha! Love it!

It was so much fun to read more about this song. It’s one of my fave Christmas classics!
I love how you provide background info about the songs and their origins! This is an oldie but a goodie and is on our Christmas playlist each year for Christmas morning
I grew up listening to Christmas albums of Frank Sinatra, Perry Como and Bing Crosby. I love the version of Frank Sinatra. Listening to it brought back memories of my dad putting the record on the turntable for us to listen to every night of Advent.
