Akina Nakamori’s “I MISSED “THE SHOCK””

Happy #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is to find a song with the words “Amaze”, “Astonish”, “Curious”, “Shock”, “Surprise”, or “Wonder” in the lyrics or title, as suggested by Melanie aka Sparky. My pick is another Japanese song, this time “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”” by legendary 80s singer Akina Nakamori. This Japanese songstress was very popular in the 80s with a handful of hits like “Tattoo”, “Desire”, and “Meu amor é…”. “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”” was released during her golden era, but was one of the last songs from her heydays as she would enter a dark period afterward. Why? Let’s find out more about that and the song below.

Lonely Night in the Rain

“I MISSED “THE SHOCK”” was released on November 1, 1988. It was released about six months after the iconic song “TATTOO”. Although “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”” didn’t reach #1 on the Oricon charts as “TATTOO” did, it made it to the end of the year song battle contest Kouhaku Uta Gassen. The track reached #3 on the Oricon charts overall. The song was also written by singer-songwriter Qumico Fucci. They wrote music for various unknown artists over the years as well as being in the alternative rock band SHERBETS.

Music experts have described the lyrical meaning of the 1988 song as: “The loneliness of the heroine who began to doubt his lover deepens.” Akina Nakamori was known before releasing this track as an artist who had more mature content in her songs with dark musical tones.

However, the track could also be related to the disastrous breakup between Nakamori and her then-boyfriend Masahiko Kondo (who is a flake in real life). The breakup affected Nakamori as she suffered poor mental health from the breakup. About six months after releasing “I MISSED “THE SHOCK””, Nakamori tried to attempt suicide in Kondo’s apartment after Kondo called off their engagement. She has gotten better and even released music a year after the incident. But, it was a dark period for Nakamori, and “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”” reflects those feelings.

The Lyrics for Akina Nakamori’s “I MISSED “THE SHOCK””

Here is the English translation of the lyrics for “I MISSED “THE SHOCK”, thanks to LyricsTranslate.com:

Because of the night of a long day
I got used to not understanding you
More than any kind of severe novel
My heart is sad. A rainy day

A very slept circuit, unnoticed by me
Is leaving my heart behind
The sure kiss of that time
Had faded in my dreams. Slow down

I missed the shock, without being aware
All starts to fall apart
I missed the shock, without being sure
Love is leaving me behind. Shock!

Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain

Because of the loneliness afraid of the rain
Someday I’ll get used to desolation
The old days that continuously chased me
Are leaving a dim shadow behind

Believing instead of doubting
Is something that now I hanged up
The weight of the night drawing near pressures me
I predict that tomorrow is just a day

I missed the shock, without understanding
I’ve lost the future
I missed the shock, The tears
That tried love is calling me. Shock!

Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain
Lonely night in the rain

Nothing is seen. I can’t see the sky through the glass
I can’t tell anyone the sighs of tears that aren’t heard
Being beautiful, being tender
Is not being empty

I missed the shock, without being aware
All starts to fall apart
I missed the shock, without being sure
Love is leaving me behind. Shock!

Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
I missed the shock! Shock!
I missed the shock! Shock! Shock!
I missed the shock! Shock!
Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
Oh I missed the shock! Shock!
Shock
I missed the shock, without being sure
Love is leaving me behind. Shock!
