Happy #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is to find a song that includes “Money”, “Gold”, “Silver”, and “Rich”, which was suggested by Paula of Light Motifs II. The song I picked is “Poor Rich Boy” by the American rock band Ambrosia. It was part of the soundtrack to the 80s movie Arthur which starred Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. I have a secret, I actually like the 2011 remake more than the original. I think Helen Mirren played a really the mother really well and Russell Brand does a good job being an immature rich boy. (Has everyone seen Arthur 2: On the Rocks?)
“Poor Rich Boy” was written by Burt Bacharach. He has been writing a slew of hits since the 1950s. He wrote many songs for Dionne Warwick (even wrote a previously-mentioned song “That’s What Friends Are For” ) and theme songs for movies over the years. He also wrote “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” for Christopher Cross on the Arthur soundtrack.
I really like this Ambrosia tune, sometimes more than Christopher Cross’s song that served as the theme (shhh,I just like other Cross songs more). I never really heard the soundtrack until a couple of years ago when it was added to Spotify. I love the energy of the song the most: going from a staccato, fast-paced opening to the mesmerizing, slower-paced chorus. And, that specific guitar riff section in the beginning (and throughout the song) is something to listen for as it is bada**.
How about you? What do you of Ambrosia’s “Poor Rich Boy”? Listen to it below and tell me in the comments.
Lyrics for Ambrosia’s “Poor Rich Boy”
Poor rich boy, you’ve got to face
Another day of tryin’ to place
Just where your heart should belong
And just what the hell is wrong
Been born with a silver spoon
But you’d like love under the moon
Someone that you could invest in
Someone you could caress
Life is more than time and money
That’s easy to spend
When you know that she’s out there
You know that she’s out there
Lookin’ for the girl whose eyes
Outsparkle all of your gold
And a heart that’s bigger than Times Square
Poor boy wakes up with an achin’ head
And someone strange in bed
Who looked just fine late at night
But not in broad daylight
Poor boy with your Midas touch
Hasn’t helped your heartache much
It’s time to take an account
Of what life’s all about
Life is more than time and money
That’s easy to spend
When you know that she’s out there
You know that she’s out there
Lookin’ for the girl whose eyes
Outsparkle all of your gold
And a heart that’s bigger than Times Square
Poor rich boy, you’ve got to face
Another day of tryin’ to place
Just where your heart should belong
And just what the hell is wrong
Poor rich boy
Life is more than time and money
That’s easy to spend
When you know that she’s out there
You know that she’s out there
Lookin’ for the girl whose eyes
Outsparkle all of your gold
And a heart that’s bigger than Times Square
Poor rich boy
Poor rich boy
