Battle of the Songs: The Dawn of a Brand New Day

What kind of words or phrases do you associate with New Years?

New, brand, brand new, brand new day, renewal, refresh, relive, dawn, early, inspiring, inspiration, start, new start, resolution, new year, new you.

Today’s Battle of the Songs features songs that mention the concept of brand new. Whether it is a brand new day or a brand new start, one of these songs (or perhaps all) below will inspire you to live 2019 to the fullest.

Sting – Brand New Day

Sting is one of many artists that have been in life since I was a baby. You see, my mother would play Genesis, The Police or The Beatles (or, if it was the summer of 1995, the soundtrack to Batman Forever) in the car when I was growing up. She sometimes played the solo career of Sting, especially when Ten Summoner’s Tales came out.

Unlike my sister, who vehemently hates my mom’s music, I grew to become a fan of my parent’s music. I actually took my mom to see The Police when they had their reunion about twelve years ago. I was the only 18-year-old there, but it was a magical time as I got to see three legends in my mom’s music collection on stage. (My mom also egged me on to hug Sting’s son, but that is another story)

I remember when the album Brand New Day came out. I was finishing up my elementary and heading towards middle school. I remember “Desert Rose” being played EVERYWHERE, like Enya’s “Only Time.”
“Desert Rose” is a great song, but my heart leaned towards title track more.

The lyrics for “Brand New Day” are so inspiring. Lyrics like these below, found in the second verse, are so powerful:

It could happen to you, just like it happened to me
There’s simply no immunity, there’s no guarantee
I say love is such a force if you find yourself in it, babe
Need sometime for reflection you say
Baby, wait a minute, wait a minute

Sting – Brand New Day

WOW!

That is some powerful stuff right there. We all need this kind of inspiration in our life! And the best part is that you could interpret the lyrics in any way possible. Yes, Sting did intend these lyrics to be about two lovers. But, love doesn’t have to be between two people. It can be about anything. For example, “you’re the beach and I’m a wave ” could mean about me and my passions. Or, ” I’m the train and you’re the station” could mean my love towards music. The interpretations are endless!

Lastly, the other thing I love is the musicality. I absolutely love the harmonica solo in the opening; it reminds of Stevie Wonder a bit. Another part that I like is the beginning of the second verse where the song’s key goes from E Major to its relative minor, C♯ minor, for a few seconds, primarily featured in the strings.

“Brand New Day” is such a powerful, uplifting, and inspiring song for anyone who is looking for a little kick of inspiration for their 2019 goals!

Little Glee Monster – My Brand New Day

Little Glee Monster is a Japanese pop group that prides in their vocal talents. They have done some wonderfully acapella renditions of their own songs as well as covers of popular tunes. Here is a sample of their vocal abilities when they performed on a Japanese TV show about two years ago:

Amazing right? This was filmed two years ago, so they have grown as artists much more since then.

“My Brand New Day” is the b-side for the group’s newest single “Natsu ni Natte Utae” Sing When It Becomes Summer. It will also be featured on their newest album FLAVA, which will be released this week. Like Sting’s song,
“My Brand New Day” is upbeat, maybe a little more, and uplifting as the theme of the lyrics is about not giving up and striving to overcome barriers one faces daily.

Little Glee Monster is a talented group that enjoys what they do and are amazing. And their song, “My Brand New Day”, is an uplifting and uptempo tune that can brighten up any morning.

  1. Although I didn’t vote in this round, I agree with the results of Trans Siberian Orchestra.

  2. I’m a little confused. Is this your January 15 battle? The rest of us post on the 1st and the 15th – so you’re either really late or a bit early 🙂
I enjoyed both versions, and even though they are two different songs, I think I prefer Sting over Little Glee Monster – although both are cheery and would be good to wake up to. My vote – Sting.
Be sure to stop by on the 15th to catch my battle 🙂

    1. I am early because I have work on the weekdays and just this week is extremely busy as I have observations. Maybe I can timed the post next time

  3. Who doesn’t like music that inspire? I think that is it’s soul purpose.

  4. I love reading about music. It is such a big part of my life.

  5. I remember when Sting’s version of this song came out. It was so great. I was a teenager and it became an anthem everywhere. Thanks for making me remember how much I love this song!

  6. That’s great song thanks for sharing

  7. Shaking my head for your sister. Really? Who doesn’t like Sting? 😀

    1. My sister is a brat. It’s ok, she will appreciate him someday, maybe!

  8. Each to his own, I believe everyone has their taste in music so it is difficult to choose. Let the best one win.

  9. Hello Dearie!
I think it’s neat that you’re using ‘Brand New Day’ in this round because I used in my Jan. 1st battle, except I used two other cover artists. Oh, you’re a youngster! Our son who’s the youngest was born in 1994. 🙂 Anywho back to your battle. Little Glee Monsters are delightfully cheery and the uptempo makes me chair boogie but I think I’m going with Sting. His vocals and version is a better match to my ears. Nice showdown!

  10. I think I prefer the Sting version! I’m not a huge music person and no next to nothing, but solely on preference…I choose Sting!

  11. STING🤘🏾 I maybe a little biased I just love sting lol and this song is one of my favorites now it’s in my head. Great post! Love it! You’re such an amazing and prolog Creator. I really enjoy your work. You put so much thought and time into your work it’s really refreshing to see. You’re a great blogger. I love your content.

  12. I can appreciate the talent and effervescent energy of Little Glee Monster and I don’t mind sugary pop, but when put next to Sting’s song it’s not much of a contest.
Definitely a vote from me for Sting with kudos for the kids.

  13. This is such a great post and super fun to read. You can tell how passionate you are about music.

  14. Gotta love Sting! I grew up to become a fan of my parents music too. You’re lucky that you’ve gotten to see him live 🙂

  15. I’d have to say Sting. Not because I think that this song is particularly great (he has many other better songs in his repertoire), but because I think the other song is poorly executed. Sting’s the winner for me!

  16. I love that lyric! I’ll have to listen to this album! I’m totally with you on being shaped by the music your parents listened to. There are certain bands that I love listening to only because it reminds me of being a kid!

  17. Sting… No one can compete with Sting. He is such an amazing artist!

  18. I always enjoy reading about your battles! I would go with Sting, because of how much I love his music in general, but Little Glee Monster is such a nice find! 🙂

  19. I must confess. Sting was never high on my radar, but, since using him in a previous BOTB, I’ve discovered more of his solo recordings on Youtube and there’s some truly good stuff! 🙂 Little Glee Monster didn’t resonate nearly as much, so Sting gets my vote.

  20. I think I must be your mom’s age…I feel ill…hahahaaa. I do my best to listen to all the BOTB and I know you are new to this. I missed December but I hope to vote on all the others for this year. Good ole Sting, I have friends who saw the Police when they first became famous. I have to give it to Sting who made it his own. The other just made it into pop music without any feeling to the words.

  21. After listening to the two videos for Little Glee Monster based on the second one.

  22. I vote for Sting, for sure.

  23. Oooh, I love the version by STING! Sting makes everything sound hip and jazzy, ha ha.
Nice battle! I’d never heard of the “competition.”

  24. I’d never heard of the competition. Its such a nice battle.. I would go with sting.

    1. Please let me know what you think! <3

  25. Never heard before I would love to check this one for sure.

    1. Please let me know what you think! <3

  26. Sting is pretty popular. I personally havent heard his music but I like the lyrics you posted regarding love. I’ll have to check out his music.

  27. Sting! While both are upbeat, and uplifting, I chose Sting.
For me, it’s hard to really compare the two due to one being in a different language and I can’t understand what they are saying.

  28. Definitely a Sting fan – having seen him four times and The Police twice! I love his writing and the melodic feel of this particular song!

  29. A brand new day is such a great way to look at things! I totally love that you have shared these really amazing songs to help get you pumped for the new year ahead of each of us.

  30. I love reading what you have to say! Your personal memories of each detail make your site so unique and enjoyable 🙂 also it’s so neat to see your own interpretations of the lyrics and how truly passionate you are about them!

  31. I like the energy that Little Glee Monster brought to the song, so they get my vote.

  32. AMY, it looks like my comment didn’t go through.
    TAKE TWO:
I like your “New Day” theme. I’ve been using it myself since late last year as my rallying cry, so to speak.
I’ve never been a Sting fan, and I liked the enthusiasm of LITTLE GLEE MONSTER, so I’ll cast my vote for them.

  34. oh my gosh there are so many i love listening to all of them like Th BEatles and Sting songs! Def have to go with him ha!

  35. I love that Sting was in this battle. I’m a fan of his music. I wish to see him featured in even more battles. Your assessment of his music is spot on. His music from the 80s is fantastic.

  36. If I had to choose, i would choose Sting’s song. It is motivating, inspiring and RAW. This is my first time hearing it lol i am not as hip as others but i enjoyed it

  37. I don’t listen to music much and when I do, I listen to Christian and inspirational music. I do love a music that is uplifting to the spirit.

  38. This is a great idea for a post, I have to say those Sting would be my choice. It’s completely inspiring and tbh the only one I had heard before!

  39. I was much more like your sister; I too hated my parent’s music growing up, especially since I was actually taunted with it. However, Sting is still a household name even today, so he’s clearly doing something right! It’s nice that you have something to bond over with your parents, too.

  40. Definitely the sting version. Not my favorite song of his, but I definitely prefer his version.

  41. I enjoyed both but I prefer Sting version better. So my vote is for Sting.

  42. I prefer the Sting version too, but the song is gorgeous!

  43. I love the first song Sting. Those lyrics are so amazing- when loves stings you, it becomes brand new! I love that!

  44. Definitely loving Sting’s version! It gives a different feel to the music.

  47. I like originals so I am going to go with Sting!

  48. My vote will definitely go to Sting. I grew up listening and loving his music

  49. It is amazing how much songs can influence us and that they have interpretation

  50. Each time I read your post, I learn new songs. I did not know about those 2, choosing one can be a difficult task for me. They both seem great.

  51. I like the version of Little Glee Monster! They are cute and I love the beat!

  52. I’ll go with Sting due to familiarity.

  53. I love It’s a beautiful day by Michael Buble……I think it doesn’t mention anything about brand new…but the beat of the song feels like it…..

  54. I don’t understand all the lyrics of the songs, but these are awesome 🙂

  55. This is such a fun post! I’ve never heard of the Sting song until just now! Great tunes indeed!

  56. Great to hear that song. Appreciate good songs. Nice article and good luck.

  57. I think I have heard Sting songs and it was cool for any ages 😀

  58. I’m an old soul too.. love the music from our parents time.. they are so deep and inspiring and relatable. The music is really good too.
A very well written article I can sense your passion for music in your words.

  59. I have never heard of this competition, but if I had to choose I would go with Sting!

  60. OMG! YOu cannot tell me your sister hates the police…I love them (but I have a feeling I’m a little older than you. Saw Sting a few years back and that man has aged so incredibly well.

    1. He is! I saw The Police when they got back together in 2007 and I was soooooooooo happy! I saw Stewart promoting the new boxset and he still has a lot of energy.

  61. Music is definitely the best therapy in the world – love it. Cool reading a post based on music, thanks for sharing.

  62. I remember the song well and like both versions. Sorry that I’m not one to pick over another’s creative efforts. I prefer to just enjoy the music.

    1. It’s ok, each artist is amazing in their own right!

  63. Got to go with Sting!! I may be slightly biased tho 🙂
