We are celebrating birthdays here on ai love music today. It seems like a lot of people was born in June: there were two birthdays today and a handful last week. Incidentally, the fabulous host of the “Music Moves Me” blog hop, Marie, is celebrating her birthday this Thursday!
What is your song for your birthday?
I have talked about how Paula Abdul’s “Forever Your Girl” was my birthday song a couple of weeks as it was #1 in the charts when I was born. I also have used one of my favorite oldies, Lesley Gore’s “It’s My Party”, to celebrate my birthday.
But for this “Music Moves Me”, I picked something new in a genre that I never thought about before. Today’s song is “Anniversaire” (or birthday) by the tropical, afro-funk band Vaudau Game from Togo.
This is an interesting group as, according to their bio on their label’s site, they mix the vibes of 70s’ afro-funk/Afro-groove with the haunting melodies taken from voodoo rituals, which is one of the traditional religions of Togo. It is an interesting idea as I never thought about hearing such a combination.
I don’t know the meaning behind the lyrics for “Anniversaire” because I don’t know French well enough to translate. Also, I couldn’t find the lyrics online (and if you could find them online, let me know in the comments). Nevertheless, the song is a great listen as it reminds me of the carefree, positive funk from the 70s: really mellow and free-flowing. It is a great song for the upcoming summer session as I highly recommend that you listen to this while you spend your days at the pool or beach.
Let me know what you think of Vaudau Game’s “Anniversaire” in the comments before! And, let me know what is your favorite songs or genres to listen on your birthday

Amy,
Thanks for the introduction. The band has an interesting vibe and unique choice. It definitely makes me wanna chair boogie. Have a groovytastic week & thanks for hitting the dance floor with the 4M crew, my friend!
I like the song! I couldn’t understand the lyrics either but I like the music. You’ve introduced me to another interesting artist.
I’ve never thought about picking a song for my birthday. Now I’m intrigued and I’m thinking about which song to pick! I think for this year I’m drawn to “Shallow” from A Star is Born soundtrack. I’m far from the shallows now, indeed!
Thanks so much for introducing me to something new! We are all about music at our house, and play a lot of different kinds of music, but I’ve never considered any one song as my birthday song. I’ll have to think about that.
I loved this fusion of various musical styles, including the “horn band” sound (early Chicago, Earth, Wind and Fire) I enjoy so much. really don’t care that the lyrics are in another language. In fact, I wouldn’t have guessed “French”.
