“Come Away with Me”: A Soothing Jazz Piece by Norah Jones

Happy Sunday! It is a damp and rainy Sunday here in Nagoya since this morning. This kind of weather is perfect for a day to stay indoors, enjoy a nice cup of warm tea and listening to jazz. One tune that comes to mind is “Come Away with Me” by Norah Jones.

Norah Jones is famous for a lot of things. One of them is father, the sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, whose music and skills greatly influenced other artists, especially The Byrds and The Beatles. Speaking of The Beatles, check out my new Battle of the Songs with one of their songs featured in this furry battle.

(This is part of #SongLyricsSunday, a weekly song lyrics prompt hosted by Jim at A Unique Title For Me. This week’s prompt is “Come/Go/Leave/Stay “, Anyone is free to join. The rules on how to join are at the bottom of this post)

An Unknown Jewel By Norah Jones

Norah Jones

“Come Away with Me” is a song from Norah Jones’s debut album of the same name. Most would recognize the song “Don’t Know Why” from this 2002 album as it was a popular song back in the day. The album itself won three Grammys: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. A mixture of blues, jazz, and folk music, this album is a must-listen for anyone who hasn’t heard about Norah Jones before.

Norah wrote the music and the lyrics to “Come Away with Me”. A soothing, slow-tempo tune that simply has the character asking his or her lover to “come away with me”, nothing more nor nothing less. Jones’s smoky vocals add a certain warmth to the tune, which is to balance the light piano and instrumentation. Although the song is very minimal as a light jazz tune, “Come Away with Me” is refreshing with its light instrumentation and Jones’s smoky jazz vocals.

Listen to the song below and let me know what you think in the comments!

The Lyrics of Norah Jones’s “Come Away with Me”

Come away with me in the night
Come away with me
And I will write you a song

Come away with me on a bus
Come away where they can’t tempt us with their lies

And I want to walk with you
On a cloudy day
In fields where the yellow grass grows knee-high
So won’t you try to come

Come away with me and we’ll kiss
On a mountaintop
Come away with me
And I’ll never stop loving you

And I want to wake up with the rain
Falling on a tin roof
While I’m safe there in your arms
So all I ask is for you
To come away with me in the night
Come away with me

Its like you read my thoughts! You seem to know a lot about this, such as you wrote the book in it or something. I feel that you just could do with a few percent to force the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is wonderful blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.|
