Coreena’s “Turn it Up”: Bringing Retro Into the Modern World in a Unique Way

Vaporwave is one of my favorite musical genres in recent years. I wrote a post about it a couple of years ago that answered the question “What is Vaporwave?” Today, we will explore it a little more with Coreena’s “Turn It Up”.

I became a fan of vaporwave after watching the Youtube series “Dead Mall Series” by Dan Bell. What makes vaporwave unique is how it takes music from the 80s and 90s and constructs a new tune. Like a phoenix from the ashes. Sampling elements and using familiar beats from the past, these are what makes vaporwave a must-listen genre.

American musician Coreena has recently explored the vaporwave genre. She transforms something new from old with her recent song “Turn It Up”.

Behind the Scenes

The Sage symbol

“Turn It Up” is the second single released by the American musician this year. The song is part of a series called “The Femme”. Coreena plans on releasing a single every 4-5 weeks. These songs are based on a female archetype. So far, “Turn It Up” is the second single in the series.

The female archetype that inspires the recent-released song is “The Sage”. According to the singer’s official site, “the word sage also means “a wise person”. It refers to someone who is wise through reflection and experience. When you give someone “sage advice,” you give them sound advice gained through your life reflections and experiences.”

The Euphonical Masterpiece

You can tell that “Turn It Up” has certain elements from an 80s tune from the very first note. These elements are found in the synthesized instrumentation. The tune opens up with slow, low synthesized notes. Next, it is followed up with Coreena singing the first verse in an ethereal manner. The song then continues on with the pre-chorus, which is my favorite part. Yet, it is the chorus that completes the circle. This part features the retro melodies that are like the ones found in the beginning.

Like I said above, my favorite part of the song is during the pre-chorus. I love the contrast between Coreena’s vocals and the instrumentation. The instrumentation plays a deep counter-melody during this section. Meanwhile, Coreena climbs up the scale with each note without a hitch. Both parts don’t overpower each other nor bring a sense of discord. Instead, this contrast between the deep counter-melody and Coreena’s ethereal voice is beautifully done. The two complements each other rather nicely! It’s a beautiful blend between dark and light!

Of course, you should listen to the chorus for its retro melody! I can’t point my finger on what exact song, but the chorus reminds me of a forgotten song of the 80s. The synthesizer bits remind me of something from The Breakfast Club. Still, the chorus is a must-listen for its retro beats. But also for Coreena’s splendid musicality.

Conclusion

“Turn It Up” is a magnificent song that mixes retro vaporwave melodies. It is all because of Coreena’s superb skills as a musician and singer. A beautiful blend between dark and light, “Turn It Up” will captivate listeners with Coreena’s ethereal vocals and mystic melodies. The song guides melodies from the past into the present world with its musicality and composition.
