The Road to Eurovision 2021: Elena Tsagrinou (Cyprus)

It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.

Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that is in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the compeition. Good luck to those are competing!

Elena Tsagrinou’s “El Diablo”

Greek singer Elena Tsagrinou’s “El Diablo” (The Devil) is the song that is representing Cyprus in this year’s Eurovision. It a song that is “about falling in love with someone as bad as El Diablo”.[1] However, this song has faced controversy from the Church of Cyprus from its devil-loving lyrics (it is the fourth song so far to face controversy this year: Belarus, Russia, North Macedonia, and now this. Man, Eurovision 2021 is on a roll!). Although “El diablo” has modern dance-pop vibes in the vocals and the instrumentation, it is such a generic song that doesn’t hasn’t much wow factor, except for Elena Tsagrinou’s vocals. I don’t think this song will make it to the finals for its generic feeling (like this is like every song that is on the radio right now). Maybe Elena Tsagrinou’s vocals will be the saving grace and be the factor why it goes on, but let’s see next month!
