Enjoy, Reminiscence, and Chill with Darrin Jones' Latest Release: "Pocket Full of Grams”

I am starting up the “Featuring…” series again! If you an artist or a band that has a new release out or needs promotion, feel free to email me, and I will feature you on this blog! You can find out how to email me with your material and more information HERE! I can’t wait to hear from you!

Just a fair warning before we start today’s feature: the song featured in today’s post might contain language that is not appropriate for little ones. So, if you want to listen to the song and have children around, it is best to wear some headphones.

That being said, let’s take a listen to today’s featured artist and song.

Release last year, Darrin Jones’ first demo EP To the Moon is filled with an array of sounds. My favorite tune from this EP is “In My Dreams”. From the start, the tune’s overall mood is calm and relaxed. It feels like it is a mixture of ambient music with the 80s’ musical vintage. The instrumental reminds me of the synthesized parts of songs from The 1975 and Kimono Loco.

And, this what Jones is aiming at when creating his tunes. When I received an email from this artist about his music, he said this about his music as it is “vintage pop vibes with a modern rap/hip hop flow”. But, just don’t confide Jones as an artist of just those two genres. Think of him instead as an artist who is exploring the vast musical universe.  Nevertheless, you can hear this in “To the Moon” as the hip hop and pop vibes go hand to hand correctly. The rap part isn’t substantial in tone at all and fits the light mood of the instrumentation.

This ambient feeling can also be heard on Darrin Jones’ latest release “Pocket Full of Grams”. With the instrumentation that is reminiscing with elements of vaporwave, “Pocket Full of Grams” features more rapping than singing (compared to “In My Dreams”). Yet, the rapping is mellow as it is a pleasant listen for those who are fans of hip-hop and rap or not.

Darrin Jones offers songs that is both pleasant to the musical ears. For those who aren’t fans of hip hop music or hesitant to try, don’t be with Jones’ discography. Yes, one could argue that there are some bad words in these songs. But as my former theatre teacher told me when I was in high school, “This is art. Whenever you agree with or not, it is art”.

Take a chance with Darrin Jones latest single and EP. The tracks are beautifully blended with rap verses and old school pop instrumentation. The mood of each song is very ambient and laidback. With Jones’ musically talent within his songs, you will find yourself relaxed while enjoying the tunes and related to the old melodies.

  4. Despite not enjoying the actual content of the song, I really enjoyed the beat to “Pocket Full of Grams”. Darrin has a really chill voice that fits in really well with the current rap songs that are on the radio. I think it’s great that you support smaller artists 😊
