Who are Candies?

Before I talk about the song, I should talk about the group first. Candies is a legend in the Japanese music industry as they were one of the earliest girl groups. The trio featured members Ran Ito (Ran), Yoshihiko Tanaka ‘(Sue), and Miki Fujimura (Miki). From 1973 to 1978, the group charmed Japan with their talented vocals, cute charm, and addictive tunes.

However, Candies disbanded in 1978 in pursuit of living normal lives. Though the members released a solo album different points in their career, each of them pursued different lives. Miki stepped out of the spotlight to become a mom. Ran and Sue became actresses, starring in different TV shows and movies.

Sadly, the trio never had a chance to reunite since their disbandment. There were talks to reunite in 2008, but it didn’t happen as Sue was busy with her acting career and rumors were that Miki didn’t want to appear in the public. However, Sue passed away from cancer in 2011, thus ending the chance for a reunion.

Even though the group has never been able to reunion throughout the years, their songs are still popular in Japan. Many tunes are often covered by other singers and on albums and TV shows.

“Toshishita no Otoko no Ko” by Candies

Kazuya Senke

“Toshishita no Otoko no Ko” was released in 1975 as Candies’ fifth single. It was the first single to feature Ran as the main vocalist. The lyrics were written by Kazuya Senke and composed by Yuusuke Hoguchi. Senke wrote a lot of songs for idols and anime shows in the 70s.

This 1975 tune is one of the more popular songs from Candies’ discography. I think what people like most about “Toshishita no Otoko no Ko” is the dance, it kind of cute. It is a cute song, but I prefer their 1977 “Shochuu Omimai Moushiagemasu” as I think that song is catchier.

What do you think of “Toshishita no Otoko no Ko”? Let me know in the comments below!

Here is Ran Ito singing the song last year on the Japan Record Awards with mega idol group Nogizaka46. Ran Ito released her first album last year, 41 years after Candies broke up.

He stuffs his mouth with red apples
And wears a navy blue T shirt
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy
He always needs my attention and he’s cocky,
And he’s annoying, but I still like him
L.O.V.E- blowing kisses
I wonder if he likes me- please just tell me straight up
The button on his pocket has fallen off
He balls up his dirty tissues
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy

He’s late when we date
He always starts fights
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy
He’s forgetful and selfish
And he’s ill-tempered, but I still like him
L.O.V.E- blowing kisses
I wonder if he likes me- please just tell me straight up
He’s lost one of his gloves
As it is, his shoelaces are untied
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy

He always needs my attention and he’s cocky,
And he’s annoying, but I still like him
L.O.V.E- blowing kisses
I wonder if he likes me- please just tell me straight up
The button on his pocket has fallen off
He balls up his dirty tissues
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy
That guy, he is an adorable
Younger boy
