Road to Eurovision 2021: Fyr & Flamme (Denmark)

Cover art for yr & Flamme's "Øve os på hinanden"

It’s May and we have about three weeks to go to the annual Eurovision contest. It will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.

Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that are in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the competition. Good luck to those who are competing!

Fyr & Flamme’s “Øve os på hinanden” (Practice on each other)

“Øve os på hinanden” by the Danish pop duo Fyr & Flamme is representing Denmark in this year’s Eurovision. The duo was inspired by dance beats from the 70s and 80s when they wrote this song. They just wanted people to get up and get on that dancefloor. And you can hear from the very first beat that it is a tune straight from the 80s with that synthesizer bit. Of course, you can hear that it borrows elements from disco with the strings and then with a guitar line that you could find in early 80s dance songs.

I really love the throwback because I am a huge 80s fan. But, I think it is a little odd for this kind of song to be in Eurovision. It isn’t a bad song, but I think listeners will go “huh?” or “Why is this 80s song in 2021?” when listening to it. Also, the vocals aren’t strong as I would have hope they would be, a bit bland in my opinion. Because of these reasons, I don’t think “Øve os på hinanden” will make it to the Eurovision finals.

The Lyrics

Here is the English translation of the lyrics, thanks to LyricsTranslate.com:

Time has stopped
What is it we’re waiting for?
Your eyes are saying the same thing as mine
So I start dancing
I’ve practised it at home
And I pray to my creator that it takes hold of me

(A dancefloor)
Rivals stretch their legs and wage war
(On a, on a dancefloor)
But if you don’t let go of me, then we rise

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practise on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practise on each other

Time has stopped
Your dress is light blue
You say something, I can’t hear while the rhythm is going

(On a dancefloor)
Where hearts swell and break in two
(On a dance-dancefloor)
We’ll never be more alive than right now

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practise on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practise on each other

A dancefloor where hearts swell and break in two
We’ll never be more alive than right here and now
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practise on each other

No one knows how it’s done
So let’s practise on each other
Soon we’re two adults
You’re the woman, I’m the man
The whole floor has lost its mind
Let’s practise on each other
