Road to Eurovision 2021: The Black Mamba (Portugal)

It’s the end of April and we have about three weeks to go to the annual Eurovision contest. It will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.

Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that are in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the competition. Good luck to those who are competing!

The Black Mamba’s “Love Is on My Side”

The soulful “Love Is on My Side” by Portuguese soul band The Black Mamba is representing Portugal in this year’s Eurovision. The instrumentation in this song is really beautiful! There are magical moments like that orchestral opening (so beautiful!) and the soulful electric guitar solo during the bridge. The vocals are not my cup of tea, but I do appreciate the vintage jazz tone in the vocals.

Although the instrumentation is very beautiful, I feel like the song isn’t catchy a lot. I don’t think it really stands out like the others. If I could vote solely for the instrumental track, then “Love Is on My Side” would most definitely go to the finals because it is gorgeous. But, since it isn’t catchy (in terms of Eurovision hit tunes), I don’t think this song will proceed to the finals.
