The Road to Eurovision 2021: Hooverphonic (Belgium)

It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.

Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that is in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the compeition. Good luck to those are competing!

Hooverphonic’s “The Wrong Place”

Hooverphonic is representing Belgium in this year’s competition with the song “The Wrong Place”. A slow-burning tune with dark tones, it isn’t a bad tune. Though the vocal melody is placed more in the higher range, this contrast really benefits the song as both light and darkness are heard throughout. But, the problem with this that there it is a bit lackluster. There is no pizzazz! Nothing really stands out! It is sort of monotonous with its energy just staying the same level throughout the song and nothing really magical comes from the vocals nor instrumentation. For this reason, I don’t think “The Wrong Place” will be going to the finals.
