Canadian pop singer-songwriter Jennie Harluk recently released her debut single entitled “Blame It on Me”. The artist recently talked to ai love music about the single and the inspiration behind her music.
Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Jennie has spent much of her life exploring music and honing her craft. She began studying piano when she was six, just around the time her father–an accomplished musician and performer himself and Harluk’s most important musical role model–purchased a second-hand guitar for her. By age 10, she was performing regularly and writing her own songs. Her musical calling has led her to perform at an impressive range of events and venues such as the Calgary Stampede and Alberta’s iteration of the Country Thunder Festival.
Continue to read out why Jennie Harluk’s “Blame It On Me” is the perfect self-love anthem. Also, listen to the song below and let me know what you think in the comments!
First of all, please introduce yourself to those who don’t know you!
Hi, thanks so much! My name is Jennie Harluk and I’m an 18-year-old singer/songwriter from Calgary, Alberta, Canada!
How did you get into music?
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember and writing since I was 10 years old. My Dad was a big influence on me as he is also a musician and we’ve sung together throughout my childhood. It’s something I’ve always had with me and known I was always meant to do.
What musical genres and artists influence you?
I grew up on Country music and I feel that I will always have a piece of Country deeply rooted in myself, especially when it comes to the storytelling aspect of songwriting. I’m also influenced by music and artists like Stevie Nicks, Blondie, and more modernly JP Saxe, Conan Gray, and Olivia Rodrigo!
Congratulations on the release of your debut single! How does it feel?
Thank you so much!!! As I type this, I’m listening to it for the first time on Spotify now that it’s out in the world, and that feels pretty great!! I’ve already seen such a wonderful immediate response from friends and can’t wait to see what the rest of the world thinks as well. It’s been a long time coming and I just feel so blessed and happy to have this song finally out in the universe!
What inspired you to write “Blame It On Me”?
“Blame It on Me” came at a time where I had just graduated High School. I wasn’t going to university, I didn’t have a ton of friends and I was feeling really low and tired of giving my all to people who didn’t give anything in return. I was burnt out. This song was inspired by my goal of feeling unapologetic and confident in myself, and I hope everyone who listens feels that too!
What is the song about?
“Blame It on Me” is an anthem for self-love and confidence. It’s about finding yourself, not relying on anybody else for your happiness, and being unapologetically happy!
What was the songwriting process like for this single?
Jackson Willows (my producer who is an absolute wizard) and I were actually jumping in on another song that we thought had some potential, but both of us had agreed it wasn’t really clicking so we decided to start fresh – and that’s how “Blame it on Me” came about! We wrote it so quickly and loved it. Eventually, we had Joseph of Mercury jump in as well and we finished the song!
What do you want listeners to take away from “Blame It On Me”?
Whatever you need to take away from it! Music is up for interpretation and means different things to different people. However this song makes you feel, I hope you feel it deeply. Whether it’s confidence, happiness, or maybe even sadness – I hope Blame It on Me is just what you need to hear!
Any future plans?
A second single is coming… Stay tuned!
