Talking to Alt-Pop Lucky Iris About Their Debut: “Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home”

What are you in the mood right now in terms of music? Are you looking for a slow piano song? An electric rock one? Or perhaps a dance-pop tune?

Whatever you are in the mood for, you should check out UK Alt-Pop duo Lucky Iris’ debut EP Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home. It features four tracks of diverse moods, perfect for any listener. I recently talked to Lucky Iris on WhatsApp about the EP as well as the duo themselves.

Check out my interview while you listen to the EP down below. Let me know in the comment what is your favorite track.

Introducing Lucky Iris

Lucky Iris is an Alternative pop (or Alt-pop) band from Leeds, England. The duo — Maeve and Jasper — formed in early April right before they released their debut EP. But, the pair knew each other since they were in school together about eight years ago. They were in a choir together in high school. But, the two just got together as a Lucky Iris this year.

Both Maeve and Jasper came from different musical backgrounds. Jasper has experience in soul and jazz. Maeve, on the other hand, likes pop and rock. However, they came together in the hopes of trying different genres together. Right now, they want to experiment in mixing the vibes of electronica, lo-fi (taking elements from this genre), and acoustic together to make something new.

Yet, they are still adding their experiences in jazz and pop to their music. For example, in their debut EP (Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home), they added jazz chords with the electronic elements. For Jasper, he experimented with the jazzy chords to have a more smooth sound.

Their Debut: Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home

Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home is their debut EP, one that is filled with different feels and sounds. “Get Ready with Me” is an electronic track that gets the listener ready for a fun night out. Meanwhile, “Take 5 (Why Can’t You See Me?)” is a steady jazz-based tune. The next track is entitled “Glitter Vision” is a Billy Ellish-like tune. The last track, which is called “I Fell Backwards”, finishes the EP with an acoustic piano vibe.

Lucky Iris told me that they hope that listeners can relate to their music, both the lyrics and the melodies. In the lyrics, the duo wants others to listen for the deep meanings in the lyrics and the various problems, like social pressure and isolation, featured in each song. “Take it as you like,” the duo’s vocalist Maeve told me during the interview, “and relate to them”.

Lucky Iris’ debut EP is a pretty solid release with a variety of sounds to attract different listeners. My favorite is the first track, “Get Ready with Me”, as I really love the upbeat tempo, the light vocals, and the club vibe. I also love the deep piano chords around the 1:39 mark, it is so beautiful!

What is your favorite track of Lucky Iris’ debut Turns Out We Should Have Stayed At Home? Listen to it below and tell me in the comments!

What is Next For Lucky Iris?

The duo has many plans for the future in terms of making music and even touring. Lucky Iris can’t wait to play at live venues once it is ok to do so. Maeve and Jasper love touring as they said it is a great way to spread their music.  They also want to get back to writing music. Jasper told me that he was mixing songs from their debut EP and hopes to release a remix album very soon.

As we finished up chatting, I asked them “What do you want to say to the readers of ai love music”? They answered that they hope everyone listens to their music. But also, reach out and talk to the duo on social media. They would love it when people say hello. Finally, Lucky Iris had one more request for you all: “Gives us recommendations for places to play at?”
