Hey Lydia, how are you? Please introduce yourself to the readers!

Hi, my name is Lydia Sutherland! From the outside looking in, I’m a 5’8 singer-songwriter from a small town in Quebec, Canada but when you dive into my music you hear all about my truth. My struggles with self-love, body image, dating friends, and accepting my life.

Lydia Sutherland

How did you get into music? What has your journey looked like?

My grandparents both play so I was introduced to music at a very young age. For a few years, I was doing singing competitions all across Quebec, one of them being the french TV show La Voix! I then released my first French EP back in 2018 just to realize I wanted to come back to my country roots and release English material. For the past 2 years, I’ve been writing for many artists all across Canada, the US, and Australia and just recently started putting out my own material. Date a friend being my newest single!

What musical genres and artists influence you?

I grew up listening to a lot of classics by Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Willy Nelson but over the past few years, my influences shifted. For my own stuff, I love mixing pop and country. So I listen to a lot of Julia Michaels and JP Saxe for their storytelling and hooky melodies. I also love Carly Pearce, Maddie & Tae, and Kelsea Ballerini for their new country sound.

As 2021 is winding down, what is something you want to be challenged within 2022?

Once the EP is finally out and I have material to perform, I would love to start playing more shows! I’ve always been so into the creative side of things that I haven’t had the chance to play live as much but it’s definitely something I look forward to!

Let’s talk about “Date A Friend”, what inspired you to write it?

I wrote “Date A Friend” after my best friend and I broke up. For a while, I was really bitter. After the relationship ended I was so easily taken over by fear, what if’s and all the negatives that come with a breakup that I forgot how good it was for a minute. I wrote it to remind myself how special that connection was and why I should be thankful I got to experience it in the first place.

How was writing the song with Robyn Ottolini and Chris Yurchuck?

It was so much fun! Robyn and Chris are two of my closest friends and collaborators. I knew if I wanted to keep Date A Friend personal to my story they would be the perfect combo to write it with because they already know way too much about my life and boy drama. Writing with them is always so easy.

How did your natural ability to self-express come into play while writing this song?

If I’m honest, this one was a little harder for me to write because I was still going through the situation at the time. I would have to say writing it with two of my friends made it a lot easier to express myself because I didn’t have to hold anything back. I just ranted, no filter and they helped me work through what I was feeling and put it in words. So big props to Robyn and Chris!

What was the most important message you wanted to express in this song?

I wanted to express how amazing dating a friend can be! If both are honest and on the same page it can be one of the easiest most special connections ever.

What do you want listeners to take away from “Date A Friend”?

I hope fans take in that yes, dating a friend can be risky if it doesn’t end up working out but a strong bond can make it through anything; even a breakup. After going through it, I think it’s a chance worth taking. You never know what’s on the other side!

Any future plans?

Over the next few months, I’ll be recording the last few songs for the EP in Calgary and then dropping a few more singles. I’ll also be writing for other artists’ projects as always and planning a move to Nashville! Staying busy!

Lydia for me is super pretty, song melody is nice especially that there’s a story behind it.

  5. I can definitely relate to this song. When my ex and I broke up I felt like I was losing my best friend. Even if the relationship didn’t last I still wanted to be friends. It took many many years, but now we are just Facebook friends.
