Happy #SongLyricsSunday! Today’s prompt is to find a song with the words “Alluring, Beautiful, Charming, Graceful, and Seductive” either in the title or in the lyrics. Like last week with Selena’s “La Carcacha”, I wanted to find a song that wasn’t in English or Japanese as I have featured a lot of songs this year with those languages.
So, I looked up what was “beautiful” in other languages and I got 아름다운 (aleumdaun) from the Korean language. When I searched Spotify for what songs had “아름다운”, it suggested the song “아름다운 나라” (aleumdaun nala, beautiful country) by South Korean soprano vocalist Moony (or Shin Moon Hee). Although it doesn’t describe a person, it is a gorgeous tune that describes the love of one’s country. Let’s take a deeper look at the song below!
To Be Born In The Land of Many Dreams
“아름다운 나라” (Beautiful Country) was featured on Moony’s 2011 album the Passion. Very little is known about Moony except she was born in 1970 and released four albums from the 2000s. As for the song, it started as a traditional Korean orchestra piece called “Fly To The Sky” in 2008 by Han Tae-soo. About three years later, Han Tae-soo paired up with lyricist Chae Jeong-eun to release a vocal version, renaming it “Beautiful Country”. It has been sung by different groups and singers like the KBS Traditional Orchestra and the Korean military band. It is also featured in the high school music textbooks across South Korea.[1]
Although “Beautiful Country” seems like a patriotic song, it isn’t tied to any one country. Yes, it is sung in Korean, but there is no mention of the country in the lyrics. And according to Namu Wiki, Chae Jeong-eun and Han Tae-soo just wanted a feel-good song about the beauty found in one’s country.[1] The song’s lyrics do display the love of one’s country by talking about the beauty in the country’s nature and seasons. It also talks about how lucky one is to be in such a beautiful country. But, you could apply this to any country: the US, South Korea, Japan, Malawi, Brazil, and so on. What beauties of your country could you relate to this song?
I love “Beautiful Country” so much, it is such a gorgeous song with the traditional Korean instrument and the strong performance by Moony. The lyrics are also beautiful too. I really wanted to feature this song because I just couldn’t stop listening to it after the first listen. How about you, what do you think of Moony’s “Beautiful Country”? Take a listen below and let me know what you think in the comments!
Here is Moony performing it at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea:
The Lyrics for Moony’s “Beautiful Country”
Here is a translation of the lyrics, thanks to the blog cRaZy aBoUt kOrEa.:
When a wide glow of sunset falls upon the mountainside
There comes the moon stepping in softly
It is so pretty in the moonlight of the night
Stone walls greet the moonlight at every alley
When snow flowers of winter sit in silently
That soft white light calms the strong wind
Am I not happy to be born in the land
Of so many beautiful dreams
Am I not happy to live on the land
With a big ocean and blue sky
Is it not joyful when everything around is sweet
With the sound of river flow and falling leaves
Is it not delightful when the sound of wind touching flowers, grass getting wet
And even the painful youth is sweet
Am I not happy to be born in the land
Of so many beautiful dreams
Am I not happy to live on the land
With a big ocean and blue sky
Having gone through a long bitter cold
Now tree root is green with a longing heart for the spring
Reach right through the sky
With tens of thousands of fresh green leaves
Am I not happy to be born in the land
Of so many beautiful dreams
Am I not happy to live on the land
With a big ocean and blue sky
Beautiful country.
