Enjoying a Nice Strawberry Pie with the Japanese Pop Idol Group Minimoni

It’s a baking challenge for this week’s #SongLyricsSunday. This week’s prompt is “Baking/Bread/Cake/Pie/Picnic”. For this post, I picked “Mini. Strawberry Pie” by the all-girl Japanese pop girl group Minimoni.

(This is part of a #SongLyricsSunday challenge, which is hosted by Jim at An Unique Title For Me. Anyone can join! Details on how to participate are found at the end of this post!)

A Sweet Song for the Tiniest Group

Minimoni

“Mini. Strawberry Pie” was the b-side for Minimoni’s fourth single “Minimoni Hinamatsuri! / Mini. Strawberry Pie”, released on January 30, 2002. I have mentioned Minimoni before with the song “Haru Natsu Aki Fuyu Daisukki!”. If you don’t know about Minimoni, they were a Japanese girl group from 2001 to 2004. They were part of Hello! Project and sister group to Morning Musume. The concept was members who were under 150 cm. The original members were Mari Yaguchi, Ai Kago, Nozomi Tsuji, and Mika Todd. By the end of 2002, Mari Yaguchi left the group and Ai Takahashi joined. The group was disbanded in 2004, but there have revivals since then with different members.

Tsunku
Tsunku

This 2002 song was written and composed by Tsunku. The singer-songwriter from Osaka was the front man of the 90s band SharamQ and the head producer for Hello! Project. At the peak of the umbrella group’s popularity in the early 2000s, he was writing 1,000 songs per year.

Sadly, Tsunku had his vocal cords removed in his effort battling laryngeal cancer. He stepped down as the producer of Morning Musume and Hello! Project in 2014, and lives in Hawaii (while coming to Japan once in a while), composing music for artists but enjoy life with his family more.

What Do You Think?

Minimoni was the first group that got me hooked with Hello! Project and Morning Musume. I love their cute songs, nature, and their funny antics. “Mini. Strawberry Pie” is such a cute song. How about you: what do you think about the song? Let me know in the comments!

Lyrics to Minimoni’s “Mini. Strawberry Pie”

Here is the English translation for the song, provided by Megchan.

trawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie, oh, strawberry pie
Strawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie, oh, strawberry pie

Tart, sweet strawberry pie
Small, sweet strawberry pie
Tada! A Mini pie full of dreams

Junjun junjun junjun junjun
We won’t give up
We’ll work together
Junjun junjun junjun jun
It takes patience
Junjun junjun jun

If you wait just a little longer, there’ll be strawberry pie
If you wait just a little longer, there’ll be strawberry pie
Strawberry, strawberry, strawberry pie

Mini’s
Misshapen strawberry pie
Checked strawberry pie
Strawberry pie for you, with all our heart

Strawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie, oh, strawberry pie
Strawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie, oh, strawberry pie

Apple pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Apple pie, oh, apple pie

Bright red, sweet apple pie
Even if we make mistakes, it’s apple pie
Tada! A Mini pie full of dreams

Junjun junjun junjun junjun
We won’t panic
We’ll pool our knowledge
Junjun junjun junjun jun
Just watch closely
Junjun junjun jun

Keep trying, keep trying, apple pie
Keep trying, keep trying, apple pie
Apple, apple, apple pie

Mini’s
Apple pie that’s supposed to be cute
Apple pie that’s supposed to be a heart
Apple pie for you, with love

Apple pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Apple pie, oh, apple pie
Apple pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Apple pie, oh, apple pie

Mini’s
Misshapen strawberry pie
Checked strawberry pie
Strawberry pie for you, with all our heart

Strawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie yai yai yai yaiyayai
Strawberry pie, oh, strawberry pie
Strawberry pie for you
