PAMELAH’s “SPIRIT”: Let’s Like Our “Self”

Happy #SongLyricsSunday! It has been a busy weekend again. Today was six hours of teacher development over Zoom. (Japan has school all year long, so if I want teacher development, I have to do it on a weekend). This week’s #SLS prompt is to find a song that has the words “Excitement”, “Pleasure“, “Sentiment”, or “Spirit” in it. This was suggested by Melanie aka Sparky. My choice is the 90s Jpop-rock song “SPIRIT” by the duo PAMELAH. I think this song was one of the best the duo py out in their six-year history. Let’s take a look at it below.

Stop Selling Your Soul

“SPIRIT” was released as the duo’s seventh single on February 5th, 1997. The song was used as the second ending theme for the TV Asashi anime Jigoku Sensei Nube (Hell Teacher Nube). The anime is pretty cool as it has a teacher who battles demons with spiritual powers (kind of Yu Yu Hakusho). It is hard to explain how Japanese shows battle demons and spirits are way different than Western ones.

The lyrics were written the singer (and also lyricist) Yuki Mizuhara. There isn’t much on Mizuhara except that was only active in PAMELAH and now doing something in her life. But the lyrics really capture what Jim said in his post this weekend for the #SLS prompt: “Your spirit can drive you to do things that you don’t even know you are capable of doing.”. But I feel like “SPIRIT” captures more of the relationship side of life. You can get over that break-up or mend that relationship. You can move on, make amends, and start anew. You have the power to do so. Besides, you only have one life to live.

What do you think of “SPIRIT”? Let me know in the comments after you take a listen!

Lyrics For PAMELAH’s “SPIRIT”

Here is the English translation for “SPIRIT”, thanks to animeyay at AnimeLyrics.com:

The soles of my shoes are worn,
just like my heart right now…

I felt it was hard to achieve mutual understanding with others.
I grow annoyed with myself, who can do nothing but nod in agreement.

Many things in this world will not go the way we want,
but when we feel depressed or discouraged, we must smile and go on.

But I want to protect the things precious to me to the end.
I want no more sacrifice to make dreams into reality.

Stop lying to your true feelings,
and bid goodbye to your goody-two-shoes self who always answers “Yes.”
Once you’ve done those, you’ll be able to like yourself.
Let’s stand firm and move on.

Although it’s been two years since I fell in love with him at first sight,
I know it’s not going to work out just by the shutting sound of the door.

I had been pacing slowly in the space between someone and me,
I knew it very well, but I was afraid of being alone.

Stop selling your soul,
and bid goodbye to your pacifist self who hates to inconvenience others.
A life with occasional hesitation is fine.
Let’s jump over any worries we may have.

Trying not to be hated by others only restrained our wings of freedom.
I don’t want it to end when I’m still unable to fly. I want to live my way.

Stop lying to your true feelings,
and bid goodbye to your goody-two-shoes self who always answers “Yes.”
Once you’ve done those, you’ll be able to like yourself.
Let’s stand firm and move on.

A life with occasional hesitation is fine.
Let’s jump over any worries we may have.

Let’s like our “self”, for we only have one.
