The Daily Feature: Proper Motions’ “Hikari No Archangel” Features This Kind of Duality

Today’s Daily Feature is “Hikari No Archangel” (The Archangel of Light) by Danish synthpop/art-rock artist Proper Motions with Noella. “Back in 2020, this was made as a love letter to my passion for mecha anime,” Proper Motions said about the process of making the song, “during that time the song had been yearning to get released.” He created the universe for “Hikari No Archangel” with the drawings he created, Noella, the lyrics, and the music he composed. In the end, he created this beautiful synthpop world filled with a certain duality: the light side featuring the melodic vocals from Noella and a dark side with harsh, distorted vocals provided by Proper Motions by himself.

Being an anime myself, I can hear similarities between modern anime theme songs. I can hear the song was influenced by the theme songs of such anime series like Kimetsu no Yaiba and Shingeki no Kyojin. I also hear some influences in “Hikari No Archangel” that came from the electropop band m.o.v.e, which provided songs for various anime series.

If you are anime fan, then you are in for a treat as “Hikari No Archangel” by Proper Motions models a anime-like world in his music, lyrics, and art. You can also hear the influences from other anime theme songs in Proper Motions’ tune. But if you are not an anime fan, fear not! Still listen to “Hikari No Archangel” as there is a really neat idea going on throughout the song that features the duality of light and dark.
