R&B-Pop artist Ruben Young recently spoke to ai love music about his musical inspirations, the release of his recent single “TNT”, and working with Buddy and Busty and The Bass. Ruben Young was raised around music, from his mother who always played incredible artists such James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and The Spinners around the house. This sparked an interest in Ruben that made him want to create his own 70’s soul-funk music. In 2017, the artist turned his dream into a reality as he began to release music including his most known single “Rachel Green” and later released his debut EP Dreamscape.
With a vocal style that’s been compared to Marvin Gaye, John Legend and Anderson Paak, Ruben is a true crossover artist who has made iTunes’ R&B, Pop and Electronic charts.

First of all, please introduce yourself and tell us how you got into music?
What up Japan! (I’ve never said that before, and it feels good).
I’m Ruben Young, a Soul/R&B/Pop artist, and songwriter from Canada. I started out singing for my friends on the bus, played in bands in high school, was in Canadian Idol when I was 16 years old and began writing songs shortly after. Since then, I’ve been streamed about 6 million times, traveled, and performed as an opener for artists like Kiesza, The Chainsmokers, and Akon, and I just released a new single, “TNT” with Buddy – one of my favourite rappers in the world.
What artists and musical genres inspire you and your music?
Soul, Pop, and Hip-Hop music are in my DNA – I’ve been around it since I was a kid, was raised listening to legends like James Brown, Michael Jackson, Pharrell, Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, and Justin Timberlake, and grew up making music that’s inspired by them.
You have shared the stage with so many famous and great artists. What was your favorite experience, and what did you learn from them?
My favourite show so far was opening up for Kiesza in San Francisco, California. Half of my family lives there, and they had never seen me perform before, so it was a very special experience for me. Kiesza is an amazing artist, but also such a genuinely kind, funny, and sweet person – being on the road with her taught me how important it is to just be yourself, no matter how successful you are, or what kind of pressure life gives you.
Let’s talk about your newest single “TNT”! What is it about?
“TNT” is about summer love – those fun, July feelings of meeting someone who electrifies you, takes your stress away, and lets you live life on a high.
“TNT” was originally called “Liquid Peppermint”, and a demo of it was accidentally pitched to be used in a toothpaste commercial. The brand offered us a ton of money to use the song, but somehow our broke asses passed on it. I guess we believed that the song was meant to become something special… and to not be called “Liquid Peppermint”Reuben Young explaining about the song
What inspired you to write this tune?
I’ve been obsessed with the soul music that I grew up on for the last two years. The live horns and bass, the good vibes, the swaggy lines that you want to shout because they make you feel alive. “TNT” was one of the first songs I’ve written that made me feel that way, and I’m so proud of it.
How was working with Buddy and Busty and The Bass?
Busty and the Bass are my favourite band in Canada, so having Nick, Chris, and Scott play on this song is special. Almost a year after making “TNT” I found out Buddy liked the song and made a last-minute trip during the pandemic (safely), to get in the studio together, and he really took the song to a whole new level. Meeting in person and getting that time together was great – just amazing memories, and that’s the most important part of the journey.
Is there anything you want the listeners to listen for in “TNT”?
I hope you guys have as much fun listening to the instruments as we had in the studio performing to them.
Any future plans?
Tons of new music is on the way. I’ll give you a little hint… two words… James Brown.
