American Alt-Rock Pop Band Songs for Sabotage Talks About “Loaded”

American Indie Rock/Alt Rock Pop band Songs for Sabotage recently released their new single “Loaded”. The band recently talked to ai love music via email about how the member formed the band, their inspiration, and behind the scenes of “Loaded”. After a decade of wandering down the same NYC streets, musicians Richey Rose & Lina Sophie met in the fall of 2017 at Brooklyn bar, Night of Joy. Bonding over a mutual love for Swedish pop, 80s alternative/first-wave, and 00s electro, the two later formed Songs for Sabotage in early 2019.

Check out the interview below on how the band crafted their newest single. Also, see how was it working with Blood Handsome on this track. Make sure to listen to the track down below. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Hello! Please tell us a little about the band! Why did you choose the name Songs for Sabotage?

We took it from the name of a book we found at The Strand in NYC. We liked the cover photo, which was of a billowing smoke cloud. The name also seemed to fit the vibe of the songs we were writing together at the time.

How did the band come to be?

We met at a bar called Night of Joy, in Williamsburg Brooklyn, where Richey was DJing. We each had our own respective bands at the time, but we had a lot of similar influences as well, so we started writing our own songs together. We did that for about a year before we formed as a proper musical entity and started performing live as SFS in fall 2019.

What musical genres and/or artists influence the band’s music?

80s post-punk/new wave, 90s shoegaze/dreampop, 00s indie/electro

It’s 2022! What is one thing you want to do this year?

Go on tour!

Let’s talk about your recent release “Loaded”. What is it about?

The general theme of the lyrics is that you’re coming back to a place where you’re no longer welcome… but for what reason? Maybe because you called someone out for doing something wrong, or simply because you spoke the truth. In the end, you’ve got some pent-up negative feelings and are craving a release, regardless of what might happen. That is essentially what the line ‘I don’t want to be a loaded gun, so set me free’ means.

What inspired you to write it?

People who have disappeared from or walked out of our lives.

What was production like? What was the most important thing you wanted to show in this song?

It was all very happenstance. We had a writing/recording session booked with Gerren (Blood Handsome), and Richey created the main loop for the song that morning. Lina then came up with the chorus vocal hook and her verse, and Gerren added his verse shortly after arriving. It all came together very quickly. In terms of what we wanted to show in the song; we really wanted it to be dark and aggressive, have a club track tempo, and also represent each of our strengths as individual artists.

How was it working with Blood Handsome?

Really fun and laid back! Richey and Gerren grew up together in the same music scene in Kentucky, so it’s a very comfortable vibe between everyone.

Was there anything you learned from the artist?

Working together just further emphasized that the most important thing when creating is to go with your gut. We didn’t spend hours picking drum sounds or dialing in the perfect guitar tone… we concentrated more on capturing quality performances that contained real emotion.

Any future plans?

We have a new single/video called ‘Rumors’ that’s coming out on Friday, February 18th. We’re also playing live around California this spring, including a set at the very first Darkness Calling Festival here in LA on March 26.
