Today’s featured artist is Minnesota native alt-rock musician The Sound Ninja. I have interviewed this artist before last year when he released the single “Lens (We Use to See)”, He worked with drummer Avo Karapetyan from the alt-rock band All Taken on the single. If you haven’t read the review, I highly suggest it. “Lens (We Use to See)” presents a unique sound to create a well-rounded song.
A Deep Message in “With Us”
This time, The Sound Ninja released the new single “With Us” last month. An acoustic rock song, “With Us” has a very proactive and deep meaning in its lyrics dealing with the events going on in today’s world. “The lyrics were written thinking about leaders who refuse to lead for everyone,” The Sound Ninja commented, “They focus on what would help themselves. If the leaders would listen to everyone and come down to their level, real GOOD changes can happen.” A very deep message for today’s society in the midst of current affairs.
The song reminds me of something from the REM’s discography from the early 90s. Or perhaps, something from the acoustic Metallica collection. It must be the acoustic guitar melody. It is very clear yet each note is very quick and sharp, something like REM’s guitar style. I can hear a similarity with Metallica during the bridge when guitar first has a brisk, low-note solo and then is joined with a heavy drum as the guitar plays fast-paced notes with intense strumming. But, that isn’t the only part that I like this song as I love the little sub-melody strummed by the guitar during the pre-chorus.
Pleasant Harmonies in “Maybe”
For the second song, the Minnesota-based artist collaborated with his wife, Kimberly Sombke, to create the song “Maybe”. Kimberly’s vocals are pleasant as they are clear, strong, and soothing. They’re not too loud or too quiet or there’s nothing really unpleasant about them. These vocals are clear in the sense that they have a steady quality as you can hear each note sung. And, her vocals do not waver throughout the song, but instead, are consistent with strong pitch.
One of my favorite parts is the supporting melodies sung by her husband during certain parts of the song like the final cadence of the chorus section. It adds a nice touch as The Sound Ninja’s vocals compliment his wife’s and add tonal depth to the main vocal line. And, the acoustic presence also supports the vocals in a positive way as the main acoustic guitar is light and matches the vocalist’s tones quite well.
“With Us” and “Maybe” are two different songs. Yet, they have their own distinct style that defines them positivity. The deep political message of current times makes listeners think about what is going on today’s world as the guitar strums a variety of interesting chords. “Maybe” showcases a different set of vocals as is mellower than “With Us”. However, the harmonies provided by The Sound Ninja grounds the song and makes it a delightful listen.
