What Is Your Go-To Song for Battling the Winter Blues?

It’s the final week of January! How has your first month of 2019 been? Mine has been an adventure. First, I came back from the US from a holiday trip. Then I got the flu for six days and was on bedrest during that time. And now, I am deciding if I need to be looking for a new job or will be sticking around at my current position for one more year.

However, I have been hit by the winter blues lately. Have you?

Coming Into January With Hopes But Getting Stuck in the Mud in the Process

That is right, I feel that I am struck by the “winter blues”. It has been affecting me recently. Maybe because I was touched by the flu for six days and that caused my productivity to go down. But also, I am facing difficulties at work and in life. Work is stressing me out, someone who I appreciate just belittles me, and a very conservative family who just stresses me out because they think coming back to the US will be the best solution in my life (and they want me back, but I don’t want to go back).

I have also been trying to look for a new job but just keep on getting rejected over and over because I am not qualified or the person they want. I should just turn my blog into a business but I been slow on this. Maybe I need to kick butt on this but how? Planning/? Having an accountability partner? Taking a class in blogging business?

I don’t want to go into all the details of my personal problems as it would be a long essay and this is supposed to be a blog about music. Not to sound like a Debbie Downer but my January has been bleak.

However, I Have to Believe

Even though this past year and this January have been pretty bleak, I have to continue to have faith that this bleakness will have to end someday. That there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That the bumpy road will soon straighten out and gray skies will turn clear eventually.

I have to keep chugging along and try to be more positive towards life in general and my goals. Self-care is essential but very hard, especially when you live in a pessimistic and hectic lifestyle. I am going to keep on practicing self-care and learning more about myself.

It’s All in the Pages

Before Christmas vacation, I watched the 90s movie The Pagemaster. I saw this when I was little as my mom would take my brother and me to almost all the kids’ movies that came out during that time. However, it has been a long time since I watched the movie and forgot the whole plot, I decided to rewatch it.

If you haven’t watched it yet, I recommend watching it. It is a great movie about overcoming your fears, believing in yourself and the unseen, using your imagination, and self-discovery. I cannot spoil the plot anymore! Watch this movie!

Yes, The Pagemaster is a kids movie. But, I think, as adults, we can learn much from this movie.

Whatever You Imagine

The ending theme of the movie is called “Whatever You Imagine” by Wendy Moten. Morten is an American singer who released some minor hit songs and albums in the 90s.

Even though many won’t recognize Morten’s career, many would recognize one of the composers for “Whatever You Imagine”: James Horner. Yes, the very same Horner who scored the soundtracks to such classics like An American Tail, Aliens, Braveheart, and Titanic! Yes, he is the man who co-wrote the iconic 90s’ love song “My Heart Will Go On”.

Of course, Horner wrote “Whatever You Imagine” with the husband-wife team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. But, you can tell that this is a song written by Horner at around the 2:16 mark. You see, at this mark is a dramatic turn in the music as the vocals and the strings come in to play the pivoting phrase. Meanwhile, the clarinet and the piano taking turns to play the main melody. I feel like this interlude is one the cornerstones of the piece as it begins a refreshing and dramatic turn to the piece.

It’s All in the Lyrics

The most powerful part of this song is actually the lyrics. My favorite part is the second chorus, which goes:

Whatever you imagine

Can make your life brand-new

There are miracles waiting

So keep concentrating

And I promise you that if you do…

Whatever you imagine can come true…

Some powerful stuff right there!

Lyrics like the ones above are to be cherished and remembered for a long time: through the high points and the tough times. Never give up your dreams and imagination, they will come true one day as miracles do happen. Miracles happen every day if you look inside your mind.

There are a lot of songs I like to listen to in order to battle the winter blues. I like to listen to upbeat songs in the genre of country, Christian, pop. One that I enjoy listening to especially in the winter is This Is Your Life by Switchfoot. It is a really awesome song.

  5. I always got the winter blues or more specifically January blues when I lived in Ireland, but I don’t get them here because January is a gorgeous month in Japan. Beautiful sunny (but cold and crisp) days and the first blooms of the year in the sweet smelling wintersweet blooms and snowdrops too. I am not familiar with that movie, but I do recognise the song. Beautiful.

lol, I am in Aichi. So, about three hours away by Shinkansen and then another rapid express train.

Cold winter days and rainy days make me feel a little gloomy. Maybe because I stay indoors during those times. The song that makes me beat those blues is “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles. 🙂

    1. aisasami

That is a great song. I love anything from The Beatles!

  7. vidyatiru
