It’s #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is finding a song with a single-word title. I quickly looked at the Favorites list on my Spotify and Zhané’s remake of the 1970s tune “Shame”. Who originally sang “Shame” and who wrote it? Find out below!
Back in Your Arms

Zhané (pronounced as jay-nah) released a 90s update to the Evelyn “Champagne” King tune “Shame”. Released in 1994, Zhané’s version was featured in the soundtrack for the Keenen Ivory Wayans movie A Low Down Dirty Shame. Their version was featured on many charts:#9 on the Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover, #13 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, #27 on the Mainstream Top 40, #28 on the Hot 100, #31 on the Hot 100 Airplay, and #46 on the Hot Dance Club Songs.
The song was written by John H. Fitch Jr. and Reuben Cross. John H. Fitch Jr. wrote a handful of songs for Evelyn “Champagne” King as well as other artists in the 70s and 80s. The same goes for Reuben Cross.
I am a big fan of Zhané’s version because I am a sucker for 90s’ R&B, especially when new jack swing is involved. How about you, what version do you prefer: Evelyn “Champagne” King’s original, Zhané’s remake, or Kim Wilde’s version?
Make sure to check out Zhané’s “Shame” down below and let me know what you think in the comments!

Kim Wilde also released a dance version of the song in 1996:
The Lyrics for Zhane’s “Shame”
Shame
(Uh, lowdown dirty shame)
(Kicking it live like it ain’t no thang)
(Yeah, lowdown dirty shame)
(Kicking it live like it ain’t no thang)
Shame
(Uh, lowdown dirty shame)
(Kicking it live like it ain’t no thang)
(Yeah, lowdown dirty shame)
(Kicking it live like it ain’t no thang)
Shame, ooh
Kicking it live
Like it ain’t no thang
Shame, oh, yeah
It’s a low and dirty shame
Oh, baby, baby (shame)
Burning
Keep my whole body yearning
You’ve got me so confused
It’s a shame, ooh
Sometimes I think I’m going insane
But still, I wanna stay
Wrapped in your arms
(In your arms)
Is where I wanna be
(Where I ought to be)
Wrapped in your arms
(Back in your arms)
That’s my high
Shame, ooh
My mother thinks
You’re playing a game
And what you do to me
Is a shame
Ooh, gonna love you just the same
But mama just don’t understand
Back in your arms
(Back in your arms)
Is where I wanna be
(Is where I wanna be)
That’s where I got to be
Back in your arms
(Back in your arms)
That’s my high
(That is my high)
Well, I can’t get enough, baby
Enough of your magic touch
Love is in my heart, yeah
Tearing the rules apart
So why should I feel shame
Ooh, I said only love
Can be to blame
If we lose our love
It’s a shame
Ooh, I wouldn’t wanna
Live with the pain
I wanna stay forever
Back in your arms
(Back in your arms)
Is where I wanna be
(Is where I wanna be)
(It’s where I ought to be)
Back in your arms
(Back in your arms)
That’s my high
(That is my high)
Shame
It’s so dirty
Lowdown dirty shame
(Shame)
It’s a shame, baby
Said it’s a shame, baby
It’s a shame, baby
Said it’s a shame, baby
(Shame)
It’s a shame, baby
It’s a shame, baby
Driving me insane
I don’t want no more
(Shame) ooh, ooh
I said only love can bring you pain
And when we lose our love
It’s a shame
Well, I wouldn’t wanna
Live with the pain
I said I wanna stay forever
(Shame)
Oh, my darling
Oh, my darling
It’s such a shame
Baby, it’s such a shame
(Shame)
It’s a shame that I love you so
Keep me burning
You keep me yearning…

I remember seeing the Keenen Ivory Wayans movie A Low Down Dirty Shame and you picked a nice song for this prompt Amy. Jean Norris and Renee Neufville make up Zhané and they are really good. Evelyn also sounds really nice.
Good song! Thanks for sharing it ☺️
Oh I had not heard this song! Thanks for sharing!
I love 90s music, too! I remember this song. I haven’t heard it in so long!
This song brings back memories of rollerskating with friends way back in the day. What a great song, made me want to relive those days.
I love music! I’d not heard this track before, but it was interesting to find out more about it.
Woah this definitely brought me back! I can’t believe Low Down Dirty Shame came out almost 30 years ago now.
90’s music is one of the best music of all time! Thing brought me back to my high school days haha!
I remember Zhane! I do remember this song too — both Evelyn’s version and their version. I liked this version by Zhane but my favorite song by them is still “Ney Mr. DJ”. Am I telling my age? LOL
There’s always a lot of work that comes into to writing a song and this one’s great to read about!
FINALLY A SONG I KNOW!! I haven’t heard this song in years. Zhane is so underrated. Love this movie and this song.
I have heard zhane before and I easily fell in love with their genre.
